Canon point: Post Umineko EP6 - Dawn of the Golden Witch

Personality: Before getting into Primo's personality it's necessary to know Keiichi's personality. Not all versions of Keiichi will turn into Primo, but any Primo was once Keiichi. Despite both being entirely different beings, there's no way to deny their connection or how Primo was originally Keiichi.

Keiichi was just your average teenager boy, there's nothing in him that would stand up for attention at first. It took someone to get to know him to actually "see" what Keiichi really was, it's not that he's a reserved boy or that he hided himself. It's a simple matter of him being exactly what he seemed, normal, average, until the situation actually required him to show what he's truly made off.

Known as the "Magician of Words", Keiichi had a special talent when speaking, not only could he be elaborate when he so desired, but he had the skill to transmit exactly what he felt to others. He could bring over his sadness or his will to fight, to even the hardest listeners and those with a closed heart. A natural leader that only took that position when he saw it's needed for him to, Keiichi was a charismatic being capable of drawing close to him other people and to break through old senseless resentments. He's full of energy and live, always ready to share a smile with his friends and have fun playing games. Not a man to back off from a challenge, Keiichi always moved head on towards anything that presented itself against him, be it a mere game or a friend being in problems. He valued his friends greatly and would do anything for them and to protect them, including from themselves.

Keiichi was like any other healthy teenager boy, which meant that he often had "perverted" thoughts about his friends, specially when it's about deciding the punishment of losing a game. He never acted upon most of those thoughts, contenting himself with just imagining or watching his friends in whatever clothes they ended in, much like they did with him when he's the one losing a game. Keiichi had a great respect for women, though, normally using his most perverted ideas to merely tease his friends (who in Hinamizawa were all females in fact). He disliked anyone who took advantage of girls in any given way, even when he's at a place where girls were dressed as sexy maids, he didn't hesitate to jump in their defense if any man tried to cross the line he mentally had drawn over that theme. In his eyes people who took advantage of girls in any way were nothing but low scum against whom he had no problems going to defend his friends or any girl he saw mistreated. Keiichi was a protector, honorable and trustworthy. He valued friendship and the bonds between people over anything else and deemed stupid and pointless any traditions or old rules that made people suffer, specially if those rules were assumed and not written. He's an intelligent young man with an hyperactive imagination who loved to have fun with his friends and play tons of games.

This was the Keiichi Maebara he had always wanted to be. A Keiichi, he only got to know after moving to Hinamizawa. However, that Keiichi wasn't the complete one, and was nothing like the old one.

Before his arrival to Hinamizawa, Keiichi was very different. He wasn't just an average teenager boy, he was, in fact, a mediocre teenager boy. With mediocre athletic skills, mediocre artistic skills and mediocre grades, Keiichi was the kind of guy who ended alone because he lacked anything that would attract people to him. His classmates ignored him, so did his professors and his family life was almost non-existent with his father going his own way, same as his mother, and all Keiichi was left with was a mediocre self. Until it was discovered that he had a gift for studying and that he was more intelligent than what he seemed, however he rarely showed it because he didn't find studies interesting and actually hated to study. Upon the discovery Keiichi was convinced to keep studying, thinking that his wishes of having friends and stop being mediocre would be fulfilled that way, he didn't wish to be at the top or be extremely popular, he just wanted a few friends and his parents' attention.

Keiichi's intelligence did indeed attract people's attention and praises, which made his ego grew as he fooled himself into thinking that everything was perfect. But as time went on Keiichi realized that despite all his efforts no one knew him, no one cared yet to know the real him, they had been content with just his grades and intelligence, failing to see the Keiichi beyond that which is what he truly wanted. As he realized this and the praises and attention stopped flowing in, Keiichi grew more desperate than ever, drowning in stress until hew blew up. Soon enough, he ended finding release and enjoyment in acts of cruelty towards little kids, mostly shooting at them with his model weapons. The children' suffering, their fear, all of it turned to be a better incentive than praises and the arrogance he earned from those grew up even more at the idea that he wouldn't be caught, seeing people confused and trying to protect their children but unable to even get close to the idea of who was the responsible. Keiichi got swallowed into a spiral created by his own hands, trying to get the attention he starved for through something he didn't like and that ended not being as rewarding as he expected, becoming a worse person with each passing day and each child he assaulted. Until the spiral reached its climax, and Keiichi shot a small girl in the eye. It was then, for the first time in a long time, that Keiichi regained his senses. He realized what he was doing exactly and how it was wrong in too many ways to enumerate, he became aware of how he was and how that person wasn't the one he had wanted to be, how far he had drifted from the path he wanted to follow.

There's no way to measure in words the amount of guilt that Keiichi felt for those events, ever since it was discovered that he had a talent for studies, it's a guilt that couldn't be erased and that he himself didn't wish to erase, preferring to have it haunting him to keep himself from becoming that person again. There's a lot of shame and self-hate that Keiichi possessed from that time and it's that what fueled the way he's after moving to Hinamizawa, trying to do things right and to really become the person he always wished to be: a Keiichi with friends and bonds, a Keiichi that protected and helped his friends and was important for them even if he wasn't the center of the universe, a Keiichi that wasn't on top of others but besides them. There's not a day in which Keiichi wasn't haunted by what he did, even when the punishments imposed by his parents' and the law passed, he himself hadn't forgiven himself and would, without a doubt, beat himself senseless if he could go back to the beginning of everything. It's his strong will and his wish to not give up what kept him going on instead of allowing guilt to devour him and all his energy turned to be used in becoming the best friend and person he could be, trying to amend his errors even if he knew that there's no forgiveness to them.

At the very core, most of this still holds true for Primo as well. Having been Keiichi, he holds the same memories and regrets, however above this core lay different layers than the ones any other Keiichi would hold. When Primo gained consciousness as himself, a being apart from Keiichi, the first thing he felt was hate followed by anger and resentment. He took to himself all the guilt and hate Keiichi felt at the end of that almost miraculous world so the human piece would be able to move into the new world without those feelings pulling him down. Thanks to regaining the memories of Luceti, memories that the human Keiichi would never regain, Primo distanced himself more from his origin but at the same time managed to keep a lot of the human traits that he would have lost otherwise upon being born as a wizard. Still he's a being born for revenge and full of negative emotions as well as his own set of morals, different than Keiichi's.

Primo shows two different faces to the world around him. One is darker and cruel, the face of a cruel wizard who finds enjoyment in torturing and crushing those that annoy him or threat the things he holds into care, capable of laughing cruelly at the sight of a crushed adversary no matter if it's a kid or an adult. Primo knows no forgiveness, nor for himself neither for others, he wouldn't hesitate to crush Takano even if she appeared as Miyoko Takashi in front of him, instead finding delight in torturing the child just as her adult form tortured Hinamizawa's village once. Primo is a man relatively easy to anger and de-friend, an example being Bernkastel, though at his birth he wanted nothing but help the witch, their involvement in Beatrice's game and him being witness of Bernkastel's behavior has lead him to want to crush her just as much as Lambdadelta. He has come to see witches as mostly a hindrance for the human world and thinks that their world and the human world should be kept apart as many problems and tragedies in the human world are caused by bored witches who wish to play a game with humans as pieces, not all witches are like this but the most powerful ones certainly seem to be so in his eyes. Because of this he often has a bitter disposition to things.

The other face he has remains mostly hidden and is shown rarely, in general he only shows it to those who knew the Keiichi in Luceti as, right now, they are the only ties he has left to humanity. Unfortunately, the people he met in that world aren't always the ones he finds outside of it, there are many versions of each world and only one of them all was there and met him. This has led him to not expect to be recognized even by those who knew him well once and to have to restart any bonds if he wants them, normally choosing to not even bother with those bonds as it's too troublesome to keep track of a single version of someone within an universe of worlds and realities and because his involvement with their worlds tends to be temporal. Despite that he's a tendency to be obsessed, even if he has kind of lost hope in regards of meeting again the versions he once met or regaining bonds as special as those were to him once, he still longs for them and if he ever finds them he will do anything to keep them with himself, whether they like it or not. It's really only because he exists in a different plane of existence that Primo manages to contain his own obsession, instead channeling it into looking for worlds and ways to bring Keiichi's human pieces together with versions of those he met.

AU History: Primo's story up until the end of Higurashi is exactly as canon goes, no changes are made there. It's at the end of the last arc of the story, Matsuribayashi-hen, when his story expands and changes. Before those changes, though, and while still being known as Keiichi Maebara, he got sent to another world named [livejournal.com profile] luceti where he spent over three years before he returned to his own world. Though the time spent in Luceti didn't affect him at first, as the memories were wiped from his mind initially, it would later become a vital part of Primo's development.

Resuming, or simply continuing as time hadn't advanced while he was gone and the memories of the other world were gone, his life in Hinamizawa, Keiichi was able to enjoy a full month of peaceful life, unfortunately a few days after the start of August the woman responsible of all the problems they had gone through, showed to be unable to be redeemed. Takano escaped the clinic where she was being treated and managed to get to Rika Furude, killing her. Before the village spiraled down to a bloody chaos due this, not only because of Rika's death but because of the way it happened and how they had offered Takano mercy only to have her betray it like that, Hanyuu, who was visible for everyone else yet, decided to take a last chance. She told Keiichi and the others about the travel through worlds that Rika and her had been undergoing in order to find a world where Rika's life wouldn't end on June and about how Takano's hand seemed to be guided by a greater power, the power of certainty. She also told them that due having used her powers to become visible in that world she didn't have enough power to pull them all to a new one, but that if them all united their strength together once more she could do it. Only one more world, one more chance to free Rika and definitively end with everything. As they accepted and helped Hanyuu, a new world was reached and Rika was given one final chance, while that world was dyed with blood.

However, the creation of that world and Hanyuu unlocking the nature of the game to Keiichi and the others had a side effect. Keiichi and Rena both had been already remembering the most of previous worlds, even if still vaguely and assuming them to be just dreams. Having the truth disclosed to them, together with Hanyuu using their power to create a new world and their hate towards Takano and whatever power was helping her, gave birth to their wizard and witch forms. Keiichi's and Rena's magician forms (Primo and Regina) had been born basically to rip the power of certainty from the witch who helped Takano and who was opposing Bernkastel, Rika's witch form. Despite not having been invited to the game, because the witch that should control their pieces was absent, both Primo and Regina took control of their human counterparts as their pieces, finally leading the game to a complete conclusion. Unfortunately, right after it ended, both Bernkastel and Lambdadelta traveled away before they could reach them. Both Regina and Primo stayed behind, making sure the last wold of the game would see a blessed future and then making sure that no other versions of that world could be tainted anymore. After that they separated ways in order to search for the other two witches.

Primo had more in his agenda than looking for the witches, though. When Keiichi awakened as a wizard and took over the name of Primo, the memories that had been once wiped returned to him, memories of a world between worlds and the people on it. Because of this he decided to travel to more worlds, the worlds of the people he met in Luceti, making sure to help and save them as much as possible. He also searched for a world not used in any game in which he could organize a game that would crush Lambdadelta's powers, however searching for a world in which certainty could be destroyed for sure was more difficult than expected. Eventually he managed to arrive to a game held by the witch Beatrice against the human Battler, remaining as an apparent mere observer up until the fifth game, when Bernkastel and Lambdadelta took over the game. Though at first his involvement was subtle, it grew in the sixth game and he's ready to charge head on into the seventh game as a player, invited or not.

Abilities: As a wizard Primo is a powerful being not tied anymore to the rules of the human world. He can travel through the human worlds and their versions as an observer or even as a participant which allows him to posses great knowledge about worlds and people no matter which period of time they are from. As any other witch or sorcerer he has the power to create furniture (servants for a magical being) and form alliances with demons. He can also teleport around the human world or the meta-world (the world of witches), generally appearing and disappearing in a swirl of red cicadas. He's the Wizard of Fate, an ironic name seeing how his power actually consists in creating a chance of breaking through a established fate, no matter how certain a fate could be, he could create a chance to break through it. Of course this isn't an absolute, he can just create the chance and assure it's reachable but it's within the power of those involved in said fate if the chance will activate or not, only when he combines his powers with Regina (who has the power to bless or curse a chance and thus make them practically absolute) he can fully destroy fate.

Primo is pretty intelligent and has had, ever since he was Keiichi, a talent for studying. He's able to quickly memorize things he has read and seen with little effort which combined with his capacity to observe and learn of any event in the human world gives him an easy time when solving puzzles of the human world. He has a special talent with words and a way with them that often makes him say the right things at the right moments, a talent he also had as Keiichi though since he became Primo this talent has gotten a twisted and no longer used just for the good or to make his feelings and emotions reach out the others. Let's just say that he can now easily make fake emotions reach out to others if he so wishes, or that he knows exactly what to say to troll or torture someone effectively. Despite now possessing loose morals, Primo has a clear concept of what's good and what's bad and he will never defend some of the things he does as being "good", he is more than willing to accept the role of the villain so long as he can get what he wants and follow his own convictions.

Though as a wizard he has magic to protect himself, Primo is decently strong physically without the need of using his magic. Even when he was just Keiichi he was capable of breaking free from being restrained by two of his friends or capable of smashing a human skull with only a few strikes of a blunt weapon and he was capable of overpowering an adult. Thanks to the memories of his time in Luceti, Primo is also a capable fighter when using push-knives and he carries on a lot of knowledge about firearms from his past as Keiichi.

Also, because he's a wizard, Primo is capable of using the colored truths, the red and the blue ones. Those colored truths are the way discussions are had in the world of witches and how the mysteries in the games are tackled. The red truth is considered an 'absolute' truth that doesn't need the backup of evidence to be accepted, while this is true it's also worth to note that this truth often is subjective and relies on word games. The blue truth is the one used to fight the red one, either by forcing it out or by pointing out the possible gaps it may have (due it being subjective) by forming theories that deny magic or the interference of witches in the human world.

Notes Regarding Powers: While in Mallow Hallow, Primo won't be able to travel through worlds anymore, neither will he be able to use his power over fate or create furniture. He will be able to teleport within the same district, but not hop from one district to another. He will still keep the colored truths as well as any knowledge he had about other worlds before arriving to Mallow Hallow.
